Can a city exist within a city? The saga of Christiania, the Danish freetown within Copenhagen continues despite the ongoing controversy of its legal status. Klaus Thymann’s project uses photography and new media to explore Christiania’s anarchistic architecture and to show that even a mall city like Copenhagen can have a second layer. Thymann captured a moment in 2011 on film, when Christiania was shut down (only to be re-opened again a few years later); he wanted to show the complexity of this story via the juxtapositions in surroundings and architecture.
